We propose the creation of a 4-piece wheel motor retrofit kit consisting of: 2 rear wheel motors, modular battery pack, and elec-tric motor controller/inverter. At a projected total cost of under $4000, the goal is to create as many instant hybrids as possible.
Only Four Basic Components Imagine that the rear (non-driven) wheels of your front wheel drive vehicle are replaced by two electric motors. With the addition of a light weight battery pack and motor controller it would be possible to turn many vehicles into instant hybrids. Most metropolitan driving could be done on electric with a 50-100 mile driving range, at reduced operating costs, and reduced smog. Electric vehicles generate only a fraction of the CO2 emissions of fossil fuel vehicles . Recycle Junk Vehicles Additionally, vehicles which would otherwise end their useful lifetime with the demise of their fossil fuel engine would continue service as all-electric vehicles. Ideally, we envision that such vehicles would be charged with renewable solar, wind, or other non-carbon-based energy sources. Design Issues Engineering design considerations for the optimal motor would include: · Motor in wheel manufactured in a variety of sizes (13", 14", 15", etc.) with adaptation around existing brake assemblies. · Magnet cost and durability. · Suspended mass and shock absorption. · Control system integration. · Battery choices to include driving distance, cost, durability, and charging options. Freedom of Choice Motor-in-wheel vehicles are zipping around the test tracts of several major car companies and have been in use since 1902. Current and future energy and environmental imperatives require us to act ASAP. We believe this means that people should have the freedom to make wise environmental choices. The instant wheel-in-motor electric/gas hybrid would be one good choice.
